Om te voorkomen dat de Verenigde Staten uiteenvallen verklaart Lincoln de oorlog aan de afvallige zuidelijke staten onder Jefferson Davis, wat leidt tot de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog. De families Stoneman en Cameron, die goed bevriend waren, worden nu uiteengedreven door dit conflict. Nadat het Zuiden is verslagen, verenigen de bevrijde slaven zich onder leiding van halfbloed Silas Lynch, die vastberaden is wraak te nemen op de voormalige slavenhouders. Om de blanke bevolking te beschermen richt Ben Cameron de Ku Klux Klan op.
