Mexico Stad, 1940. Na door Stalin te zijn verbannen woont Leon Trotsky (Richard Burton) met zijn vrouw in een zwaar beveiligde villa in Mexico. Hij houdt zich nog steeds bezig met de politiek en dat zint zijn oude vijanden helemaal niet. Huurmoordenaar Jackson (Alain Delon) wordt op Trotsky afgestuurd. Jackson verleidt één van Trotsy's sympathisanten, de lieftallige idealiste Gita Samuels (Romy Schneider), en weet zo door te dringen tot Trotsky's cirkel van vertrouwelingen.
